Salvatore Amorelli, aka Totò... the Pipe King

Salvatore Amorelli, in arte Totò… il Re della pipa

It was 1978 when Amorellia young university student in Pisa, was given a pipe as a gift that made him fall in love with it to such an extent that it ignited in him extraordinary, unique potential, which over time made him the undisputed King of the handmade pipe, especially for collectors.

This passion prevented him from transforming his handicraft business into an industry, despite the requests that arrived from all over the planet. In fact, each pipe is a story, a piece of briar different from the next, extraordinary designs and engravings, workmanship of almost maniacal precision, unique creatures, not clonable, not reproducible. Art objects in every way.

Amorelli produces jewelled pipes, mixing precious materials such as briar and horn with diamonds, pearls and gold. This is why his pipes have become part of the lives of important personalities such as the Saudi King HH Abdullah Al-Saudthe Pope His Holiness John Paul IIthe former President of the United States, Bill Clintonformer German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the Italian cartoonist Milo Manara.

Amorelli also creates pipes for ladies. His first collection was created with the collaboration of Gudrun Pasternak, the last heir and granddaughter of Boris, author of Dr Zhivago, and they were true jewels dedicated to moments of relaxation.

In our patient search for true luxury, we stopped in Caltanisetta, Sicily, at Totò's workshop and were fascinated by this perfect mix of creativity, craftsmanship and innovation.

This is where the line dedicated to Anima Mediterranea was born in honour of the most authentic excellence, a hymn to wonder, to the magic that the art of making and creativity can offer while respecting tradition.
